Text Box: The Black Horse is the only Village Pub left in Tollerton, with one having closed some years ago, and the other now being a fine Chinese Restaurant

The Black Horse dates back to the mid 18th Century, when it was built as a coaching inn on the main toll road from York to the North. Travellers paid a toll to buy protection on their route through the Forest of Galtres, which was inhabited by rascals, wild boar, and other dangerous things.

The pub is in a prime village location, and is not far from the Tollerton Caravan Park, Chombeys and Angel House Bed and Breakfast establishments, from which the North Yorkshire Moors and Dales are in easy reach, and rich in tourist attractions.

Tollerton lies just 6 miles from the Georgian Market town of Easingwold and affords easy access to the Yorkshire Dales, Howardian Hills and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and is just 10 miles from the magnificent walled City of York. Visit Harewood House, Castle Howard, and the white horse at Kilburn. Ancient market towns of Thirsk, Helmsley, Kirby-Moorside and Pickering are all within easy driving distance. Cycle and bridle paths abound in this stunning area, and Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington are only an hour away.

This is one of the few remaining pubs in the district with a traditional “Tap Room”, as well as a Lounge Bar and charming Dining Room. In June 2007 the “Stable Yard” beer garden was completed to coincide with the controversial smoking ban.

The Black Horse now supports a ladies Darts team, and two men’s darts teams playing in the respective Easingwold and Districts Leagues, and a winter dominoes team. A Quiz is held every second Tuesday evening in aid of Alne Hall, a Leonard Cheshire Home. All are welcome.
The Black Horse has been run by Judi and Dave Duff since April 2006. Dave and Judi returned to England after a long term abroad, and spent a few years in the South of England in commercial and engineering fields, before finally taking the plunge into a career they had long dreamed of.
